Flashback Friday - Keeping Time

I have a weakness. I love, love, LOVE writing and reading stories that take place partially through correspondence. A Hidden Beauty has our gay poets writing letters back and forth, we just wrote a short series of e-mails in our May Calendar Boys story, but the one that started it all was Keeping Time. Ben and Ana meet online and correspond first through e-mails, then chat. Those first few chapters were some of the fastest Pepper and I have ever written, lol.

Ana Seger first meets Ben Scalia over an Internet message board dedicated to her favorite band and is immediately charmed by his humor and good-nature. Even when she learns Ben is a few years younger than her, she continues talking to him though email, chat rooms, and even on the phone.

Driven by strong lust, she agrees to meet him at a concert, but she’s unprepared for the reality of their age difference, and more, the strength of her desire for him. bj_scalia: Only the fact that I grew up there saved me from packing my sandals. I live in them on the weekend. It's Nike's during the week because of all the walking on campus, and running when I realize I'm late getting to class. And we're not really sitting here talking about my choice of footwear, are we?

I found Keeping Time to be a very hot and enjoyable romance between a younger man and his love for his older woman. The roles are very much reversed and then fact that Ana is not only a decade older but almost two decades older than Ben was very interesting to read. Ben is one character who appreciates Ana for the woman that she is, regardless of her age. The sex between them is amazing and very adorable at times. These are two characters that you can imagine marrying and growing old together. Jamie Craig has written a wonderful and sexy romance that shows age is just a number when it comes to true love.

Keeping Time is a tiny bit of a departure for us. First, we experimented with using email, chat transcripts, and phone calls to further the relationship. That was a lot of fun, and honestly, I wouldn't mind doing it again. Also, it's our first interracial romance (though I don't think you can tell from the cover. What do you thing), and it's our first older woman/younger man relationship. Oh, also, I wrote the girl. Which is rare enough that it deserves mention, lol.

Completed: Keeping Time

Yesterday, Vivien and I completed a short novel for Amber Quill Press. It was a really great change of pace after writing Touching Silver (I'll blog more about that later, after we send it off to our editor).

One thing I love about our books is our variety. We have m/m, m/f, and m/m/f. We have stories that are fluffy and fun and stories that are dark. We have contemporaries and paranormals. We have urban settings and settings in the country. I think the only thing we haven't done yet is a historical, and I'm sure it's just a matter of time until something strikes us. I know some authors make a name writing in one or two genres. And that makes its own sort of sense. It's one way to garner a large and loyal audience. But I think I would get bored if we wrote in the same genre over and over. Vivien is great because she's always open to new ideas, new approaches, and experimenting.

Keeping Time is one of our experiments. First, we went with an older woman/younger man, and the age difference is significant. Second, it's our first interracial romance. Which didn't really have much bearing on the story, but it's still a first. Third, we played with format by presenting chapters as emails and chat transcripts. We didn't overdo it, though. Just enough to make it interesting. But one thing didn't change--one thing never changes. I love our characters.

Anyway, Trace indicated he's going to slot it for an early September release. It might be released the day before my birthday. Which would be pretty cool.
